A woman in the South who had been a target of a hate crime in her hometown for wearing a hijab told The Wall St. Journal on Monday that she has received death threats after she posted a video on YouTube.
In the video, a man with a black hooded sweatshirt stands over her and starts yelling “this is America!” in Arabic.
The woman then responds with, “I don.t. know what.
it. is. about.”
The video has been viewed nearly two million times and has drawn hundreds of comments, most of them expressing anger.
In one, a commenter says, “If you see this, you know this is not a real person.”
In a statement, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Morocco said it has been made aware of the video and is investigating the threats.
“We are aware of a video circulating online of a Moroccan woman who is wearing a veil during a protest outside the United States Embassy in Rabat,” the embassy said in a statement.
In addition, we are taking the appropriate actions to investigate the situation.”
