Scottish feminist and transgender activist Sarah Wilson recently revealed that she was in danger of losing her home in the Scottish Parliament after being referred to as “a transsexual” for having transitioned from male to female.
She says she was threatened with violence for speaking out about the harassment she faces by her former colleagues, but says the police have done nothing.
“I have been harassed by other people, and even threatened with murder.
They told me I had to come back to work tomorrow, or they were going to kill me,” she told the Scottish Times.
“They told me that I would have to leave my house if I didn’t do this, that I was going to be killed.”
Ms Wilson said she feared for her safety because she had recently come out as a transgender woman to her colleagues.
“My safety and the safety of other trans women and trans men are very, very important to me,” said Ms Wilson.
“What is happening in Scotland right now is not acceptable, it’s not just about trans women.
It’s about all women, trans men, all people of colour.”
Ms Johnson, who describes herself as “fiercely independent”, said she felt intimidated and mistreated by colleagues in the women’s and transgender rights movement.
She said she had also received death threats.
“When I came out to my colleagues I was told to be quiet and to hide,” she said.
“The reason I was being told to hide was because I was transgender, and I had said that in my interview with them.”
In her article, Ms Johnson says that while her former employers may have referred to her as a “transgender woman” she has been called a “fucking cunt” and a “dirty faggot” by colleagues who she said were homophobic.
She also says that she has faced death threats, including one that was delivered to her home.
Ms Johnson said she is now planning to go public with her story because “if I had done anything wrong I wouldn’t be here”.
“I am terrified, because I am afraid I will get in trouble, I will lose my house, my job, my livelihood,” she added.
Ms Wilson was not the only trans woman to face threats from her former employer.
In a statement published on social media, the Scottish Labour Party said that the party had no policy or procedures in place for handling “threats or abuse of any kind”.
“We do not tolerate discrimination, hate speech, harassment, intimidation or abuse towards any individual, party, organisation, organisation member, staff member or member of the public,” the statement said.
However, the statement added that “any person who feels threatened by a member of staff or member in the workplace, or anyone who feels their safety is threatened by the actions of a member, will report the incident to us as soon as they discover it.”
The statement also stated that the “Labour Party will not tolerate any form of harassment or abuse” of trans people and said that it would “take all appropriate action” against “any individual who makes such an allegation”.
The Labour Party has not commented on Ms Wilson’s allegations.
