Women in New York are being advised to pack a lot of clothes.
They’re being told to buy clothes they can carry with them and not to leave any clothes at home.
“It’s really important to keep a little bit of clothing in your home, but not to wear too much,” said Rachel Buehler, president of the Women’s Clothing Collective, a group of women in the apparel industry who gathered in the city on Saturday to share their tips on packing and organizing.
The collective says the advice comes from a “consistent thread” of female empowerment and solidarity.
The Women’s Collective is part of a global movement to get more women to make their own clothes.
(CBC)”I’m not suggesting that you go out to the mall and buy all the clothes that are available, but I do think that it is helpful to have some sort of structure,” said Buehl.
“I think it’s good to be able to go out and buy a shirt that you can carry in your backpack and just sort of be able put it in your closet and not worry about it being lost.”
The group has been holding its annual New York City Fashion Week event for more than a decade, and Buehel says the events are a place where women come together to share tips, ideas and resources.
“This is something that we’ve really wanted to get involved in for a long time and it’s definitely been a catalyst for the growth of the women’s apparel industry in New Zealand,” she said.
Women in the clothing industry are encouraged to make shirts for each other, but some prefer to wear their own dresses, hats, dresses or skirts to show their support for their fellow sisters.
The group also promotes the use of fabrics like silk, wool, silk scarves, and more, to support each other.
It’s important to have a little more clothing, but it’s not to be a hoarder and you’re not going to have enough, said Bueshler.
The women also suggest organizing trips or events in which women get to wear the same outfits they are wearing now.
It can be a challenge, especially for older women, but they say they have found ways to do it.
“We’ve always been supportive of each other’s experiences and I think it really makes sense to have these groups because they can be really empowering,” said Amanda Leibowitz, one of the founding members of the New York Fashion Week.
Women’s clothing is often a way to show support for the female experience and women who wear it can be seen as supporting each other more than just themselves, said Leibowitz.
It also can be an investment, she said, because women can earn money selling their own clothing or donating it to charity.
Women can make their way to the event at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which is open to the public.
“The thing that makes the event really special is that you are not just going to be looking at one or two pieces of clothing,” Leibows said.
“You can really connect with a whole collection and really get a sense of the fabric and how it was made, which really can be amazing.”
